One textbook defines music as "the art of sound in time".
J.S. Bach said " Music is an agreeable harmony for the glory of God and the permissible delights of the soul."
Aaron Copland said "Music has four elements: rhythm, melody, harmony, and tone color. These ingredients are the composer's materials. He works with them in the same way any other artisan works with his materials"
But what do our students say about music? I asked music students in PreK through 3rd grade to define music. Here are some of their responses:
"Music is lines and notes that make up a staff." ~Audrey Weston, 2nd grade
"Any instruments can be used to make a different sound. I would draw a picture of instruments to explain what they sound like." ~Audrey Johnson, 2nd grade
"If I wanted to explain music, I would use my hands and wave. We could also dance to show what it looks like. Let me think about this some more...." ~Emilia Nguyen, 1st grade
"Music is where you sit and listen and play." ~Paige Hall and London Holly, Kindergarten
"Music is a song." ~Kamryn Crenshaw, Kindergarten
"You always dance with music!" ~Madalin Spencer, PreK
"It's sometimes a sweet sound or a sad sound that you can feel." Perri Higgins, 3rd grade
"To explain music, you can make a motion to keep a beat." ~Mason Pratt, 3rd grade
"Music can bring us joy and happiness." ~Brynna Harrison, 3rd grade
"Yeah, but sometimes it makes us feel sad." ~Bleu Hall, 3rd grade
